Smith Cleere, 85, Stonewall, are 2 p.m. Thursday at Criswell Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Vernal West officiating. Burial follows at Rosedale Cemetery. Mrs. Cleere died Dec. 31, 2002, at a Stonewall nursing facility. She was born Aug. 24, 1917, at Ada to Jim and Josie Dillard Green. She lived in the Ada and Ahloso area most of her life and attended Ahloso schools. She married Oscar B. Smith on Dec. 2, 1933, at Ada. He died March 10, 1960, at Odessa, Texas. She married Joe Cleere on May 31, 1969, at Ada. He died March 26, 1971, at Ada. Mrs. Cleere worked as a welder in the Richmond, Calif. shipyard in the 1940's during World War II. She was a dietary supervisor at Valley View Regional Hospital, retiring in 1977 with 20 years of service. She was a longtime member of the Evangelistic Temple. She was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy H. Smith, on Dec. 2, 1999. Survivors include two daughters, Lou Hunt, Stonewall, and Dona Kay Alcorn, Alex; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Bearers are grandsons Keith Alcorn, Jamie Scott, Mitchell Barrent, Dan Alcorn, Shain Braum and friend Wayne Chronister. Edward Dale Parker, Healdton, officiating. Mrs. Monger died Dec. 30, 2002, at a Sulphur nursing facility. She was born Sept. 6, 1915, at Woodford to Ben Parker and Nellie Viola Thompson. She attended schools in Ardmore and Healdton. She moved to Sulphur in 1932. She married Leonard Monger in August 1935 at Sulphur. Mrs. Monger wrote music and songs, several of which were published and played on the radio. She also wrote poetry and one of her pieces, "Neath Viet Nam Skies" was read many times on the radio. She was the first female dispatcher for the Murray County Sheriff's Office and at one time served as cook for the prisoners. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Monger; a daughter, Lawanda Jean Bisile; and two grandchildren, David VanOrden and Michael Scott Basile. Survivors include a daughter, Treva Kerns, Sulphur; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Cowley-Krien Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. =============================================================================== Obituaries for Thursday, January 2, 2003 Ada Evening News, Ada, OK GRACE STEVENSON FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Services for Grace Stevenson, 85, Fayetteville, are 2 p.m. Saturday at Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home, Holdenville, Okla. Ms. Stevenson died Dec. 29, 2002, at a Fayetteville nursing facility. She was born Aug. 5, 1917, at Stratford, Okla., to Alfred and Ruth Margaret Houston Stevenson. She grew up in Holdenville and graduated from Holdenville High School. She attended Lindenwood School for Girls and then transferred to the University of Oklahoma, graduating in 1940 with a bachelor's degree in journalism. Ms. Stevenson was an aviation pioneer, having earned her commercial pilot's license. At the age of 23 she became the first woman in the nation to become certified as a flight instructor, teaching at the Spartan School of Aeronautics, Tulsa. She later became a flight instructor for Mountain Airways in Casper, Wyo. At the outset of World War II, Ms. Stevenson volunteered to be a pilot for the British Government. She ferried war plans for the British Air Transport Auxiliary from 1942 until 1945, totaling 875 missions. As a result of her flying experiences she has been among women pilots featured in various book and magazine articles and in a PBS television documentary. Following the war, she was employed as a secretary for U.S. Plywood, Bakersfield, Calif. She later returned to Holdenville. She is survived by a sister, Marjorie Stevenson, Fayetteville. Berryman, 76, Ada, were 10 a.m. today at Eighth and Oak Church of Christ, Carl Johnson officiating. Burial followed at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Berryman died Dec. 31, 2002, at a Sulphur hospital. He was born July 2, 1926, at Oakman to Jess and Myra Coffee Berryman. He lived in this area all of his life and attended schools in Oakman and Byng. Mr. Berryman married Lenora Whitson on Aug. 10, 1946. She died Nov. 9, 1987. He married Virginia Newton Delozier March 25, 1989. Mr. Berryman drove a school bus for Vanoss and for Byng for several years, retiring from Byng schools. He was a member of the Church of Christ and had also attended Galey Church of Christ, where he served as deacon, for many years. He also served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Berryman, of the home; a son, Charles Berryman, Ada; a daughter, Kaye Cranford, Stonewall; a stepson, Russell Delozier, Ada; two stepdaughters, Beverly Fiveash, Ada, and Brenda Simpson, Alaska; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Bearers were Don Kite, Tim Fiveash, James Whitson, Jim Calhoun, James Prince and Russell Delozier. She then relocated to Dallas, Texas, where she worked for Collins Radio making components for space flight. She returned to this area in 1985 after her retirement. She was an electrical engineer assistant and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She married Wilferd Luper Oct. 4, 1945, at Oklahoma City. He was born April 29, 1918, at Holdenville to Emit and Edna Cain Petete. He was raised in Holdenville and attended Holdenville schools. He married Susie Jane Cully May 11, 1941, at Seminole. She died in 1988. Mr. Petete was inducted into the U.S. Air Corps in October 1942 and was stationed in India during World War II. He was discharged in October 1945. He was retired as a heavy machine operator for Hughes County District 1 under commissioner Bill Benham. He was a member of American Legion Post 32 in Holdenville. He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Trent Mackey. Survivors include two sons, Pete Petete, Moore, and Leon Petete, Ada; two daughters, Vicky Mackey, Holdenville, and Karen Petete, Ada; a sister, Lucille Collis, Holdenville; three brothers, Hugh Petete, Wichita Falls, Texas, Spencer Petete, Holdenville, and Theo Petete, Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was a nurse's aide and moved to Shawnee in March 1997. She was a Baptist. She is preceded in death by two sons, Doyle Dane Skaggs on Sept. 18, 1997 and Benjamin Ray Skaggs, 1957.
