She attended Ada High School and East Central University and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Music Education. She taught vocal music for Broken Arrow Public Schools at Haskell Middle School until she retired in 1993. Melcena couldnt go to a store or a restaurant without someone stopping and saying Didnt you use to teach at Haskell?. She loved hearing about how her students had gone on in music. Melcena loved life and all her many friends and family. She always wanted to make sure you were okay. Everyone knows how much she loved purple, cookbooks, music boxes and singing, but her pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. Melcena also enjoyed a life full of activities including knitting, serving, cooking, camping, four-wheeling, playing on the computer, shopping and most of all having her family around. To her aerobic friends we say Thank You. She never wanted to miss a day of her aerobics. She loved you all deeply. Your monthly luncheons were so important to her, please keep that going and remember her often with a smile. Melcena was a member of the Broken Arrow Church of Christ. She had been a charter member of the 29th and Yale Church of Christ until they moved to Broken Arrow in 1993. She loved the Lord and singing his praises. What a glorious voice she had!
