Treadwell, age 82, passed away April 1, 2003, in the St. Joseph Rehabilitation Center in Bryan, Texas. Mr. Treadwell was born June 6, 1920, in Roff, Oklahoma, to Thurman K. and Myrtle Treadwell, Sr. In 1942, he married Nell McNeely of Memphis, Tennessee. Nell passed away on Feb. 17, 1992. Mr. Treadwell remarried on March 15, 1997, to Joleeta "Jo" Little Wallrath of Ada, Oklahoma, and Miami, Florida. Mr. Treadwell began his College education in 1937, receiving his Teaching Certificate from East Central State Teachers College, he went on to the University of Oklahoma earning his B.S. and M.S. in Geology. In 1952, he received his Ph.D. in Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, a M.S. degree in Arctic Ecology from McGill University and in 1968, a certificate of Computer Programming from George Washington University. Serving his country faithfully, he was a U.S. Navy Submarine Officer during WWII. From 1945-1968 he did field work in the U.S., Canada, Greenland, Mexico, Caribbean, South America and the Middle East. As a U.S. Navy Map Maker and Oceanographer, he retired as Captain. He served as Chief in the U.S. Navy Mission to Haiti and Commander of the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office. Mr. Treadwell was a Liaison with USSR Inst. Of Oceanography and U.N. Oceanographic Commission. He also served as Senior Staff Scientist for the Executive Office of the President. He was a Professor and Head of the Department of Oceanography at Texas A&M University from 1969-1986. In 1989, he retired from the University as Professor Emeritus. He continued research and consulting as President of the Institute for Photographic Research from 1989-2003. With his interests in Oceanography, he served as Director of the Explorers Club and Contributing Editor of the Explorers Journal, President of the American Society for Oceanography, Director of the Marine Technology Society, Past President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Stereoscopic Association, Director of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Chairman of the University Oceanographic Laboratory System, Vice President and Director of the Marine Geodesy Society and President for the Institute for Photographic Research. His Honors include the Commendation for development of women in education, awarded the Eagle Scout, Distinguished Service Award from the Central Intelligence Agency in 1970, letter of Commendation from the Department of Defense, Medal of Petion and Bolivar for training Haitian Coast Guard and fisherman, Diploma of Achievement in Arts and Sciences from Iran for his research projects, a plaque for his outstanding service from the NAACP, Distinguished Service Award from the National Science Foundation and National Security Agency, Distinguished Service Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Antarctic Service Medal, four combat area service medals, and the submarine combat pin with five stars, Governor’s Award for distinguished service to public education, Minnie Piper Stevens Award and Regents Commendation from Texas A&M University and was named Honorary Staff Scientist with the USSR Institute of Oceanography. His publications include nautical charts and maps; separate books/booklets and magazine articles. Mr. Treadwell is survived by his wife, Joleeta "Jo" Little Treadwell and his two sons; Terry, a Computer Systems Designer with Northrup-Grumman and Philips, a Marine Engineer for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, a sister, Mary Gillaspie, five Grandchildren and two Great Grandchildren. A visitation will be held from 2-3 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2003, in the First Presbyterian Church of Bryan, Texas. Funeral Services will begin at 3:00 p.m. with Dr. Philip McLarty officiating. A Graveside Service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2003, in the Rosedale Cemetery, Ada, Oklahoma.
