Bill was born in Avoca, Okla., just outside of Asher, on March 28, 1923. He lived in central Oklahoma with his Mother and Father, Loretta and Steve, and his brother and sisters, Archie, Ruth and Anna, for most of his childhood. World War II started before he finished high school and like a lot of other brave boys, he joined the Army to fight for his country. He served in the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper and fought freedom in North Africa, Sicily, and many of the other major European battlegrounds. Although he was in the midst of a lot of action, and most of his unit, the 505th Regiment, became casualties, the Lord saved Bill. Surely God had a special plan for him. After the war was over and he returned home, Bill earned his high school diploma and proudly attended the University of Oklahoma, where he received a Degree in Pharmacy. He worked for Veazey Drug Co. in Oklahoma City, when he met the love of his life, Lois. He and Lois were married two weeks after they met on November 11, 1951, he never hesitated when he found something he wanted. They had two sons, Kim and Steve. In 1962, Bill moved his family to Odessa, joined Sherwood Baptist Church, and started to work for Town and Country Drug. Though he simply started as a hired Pharmacist, he eventually owned it and built it into the largest independent drug store between Dallas and El Paso. During his 30 years there, he helped thousands and thousands of sick, down-on their-luck, and just plain deserving people, and earned a well deserved reputation as a man who helped people. On October 14, 1992, he retired, but he never stopped helping people. He continued to help people by offering sage advice, sitting with sick and dying people, and in many other ways. He became a Deacon at Sherwood Baptist, serving as chairman of the Finance Committee, and helping rewrite the bylaws. He eventually served on the Finance Committee at First Baptist Church, and volunteered for just about any job that he could do. He loved his Church, the people in his Sunday School Class, and just about everyone he met. When he arrived in heaven, he was greeted by his father, Stephen Farmer, his mother, Loretta Farmer, and his sister, Anna Nichols. His legacy of kindness and love will be carried on by his wife of 52 years, Lois Farmer; his brother and sister, Archie Farmer and Ruth Hamilton; his sons, Kim Farmer and wife, Julie of Murrieta, Calif., and Steve Farmer of Odessa; and by his beloved grandchildren, Bridget and Christine of California and Ben and Amanda of Texas. We’ll all miss him very much. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Cook officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be made to First Baptist Church. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Pottawatomie County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/pottawatomie/pottawatomie.htm
