All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Bakersfield Californian Elsie Mae Grider Services: Wed., Aug. 28, 9:30 a.m. Services will be held Wednesday, August 28, at 9:30 a.m. at Gtreenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd., for Elsie Mae Grider who passed away August 22, 2002. Elsie was born on February 18, 1929 in Clarksville, Georgia, the 8th child of Barney and Chloe Rena Kastner. Elsie spent her childhood in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The family moved to California in 1946 when Elsie was 17. Elsie married the late Ooley William Grider, Jr., on December 15, 1950, in Wasco, CA. They moved to the Greenacres area in 1955 where Elsie and Jr. raised five children. Elsie worked for the Kern County Superintendent of Schools for 23 years before retiring. Elsie devoted most of her life to helping others. The first part of her life she spent helping her oldest son, Jake, deal with childhood polio while raising her four other children. Later she spent 23 years helping special needs children at the Harry Blair Learning Center. In her later years, Elsie cared for her husband, Jr., after he suffered a series of strokes. Elsie gave freely of her time and energy to everyone who needed it. She was very involved with her grandchildren, and still found time to pursue her hobbies of bowling and gardening. Elsie is survived by her sons, William Jake Grider and fiancee, Sue Alexeev and Jerry Grider and wife, Nancy; daughters, Betty Dunlap and spouse, James, Janette Melendez and spouse, Jack and Beverly Hunt and spouse, Chris; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers; four sisters; plus many nieces, nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ooley William Grider, Jr., as well as two brothers and four sisters. Pallbearers will be Gene Simonson, Randall Kastner, Richard Kastner, Walter Scott, John D. Manor, Roger Kastner, Richard Davis and Rodney Kastner. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: M.A.R.E. Horse Riding Therapy, 18110 Johnson Rd., Bakersfield, CA 93312.
