Don graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1952, and he always said that he was a "true blue BHS driller." Don spent many years working in the meat industry starting out at Rudnick Meat Co. and Wilson Meat Co. and in 1975 he opened Hammon's Meat Sales with his brother, Bob Hammons. Together, they created a family company and a staple for the Bakersfield Community. An avid sportsman, Don loved hunting, fishing, and sports, even bowling; as we all remember the 300 game he bragged about. In his early years, Don started, and played, for the BC Renegades, which went on to win the first Jr. Rosebowl National Championship in 1953. His team photo still proudly hangs on the walls of Luigis highlighting "The Slaughter House Seven and their coach, Homer Beatty. Don's passion was golf, and with six hole in ones, he was a mighty force at many tournaments. The most memorable was The Oldsmobile Scramble Finals in Texas, which he went on to win in Florida. Don was a real character and every week you would find him at Bill Lees, Woolgrowers, or Noriegas, eating lunch alongside some of his best friends and talking business or sports; That was his life.
