All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Bakersfield Californian Charles Lowell Kilby "Chuck" Services: Monday, July 22, 10 a.m. Chuck was born in Tecumseh, Oklahoma, Dec. 15, 1932, the youngest of 8 children to Thomas and Ella Kilby. He was a graduate of Porterville High School, class of 1950. Chuck proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy for 4 years on the U.S.S. Potter where he saw action during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, he moved to Coalinga, CA and went to work at JC Penney where he met his loving wife Dorothy Kofahl. To that union they had one son, Gary. Chuck went to work for Shell Oil Company in Coalinga, then transferred to Bakersfield where he retired after 28 years of service. Chuck was Master of the Tejon Masonic Lodge (now known as Caledonia Masonic Lodge) from 1973-1974 where he received the Hiram Award for service to the community. He also served as Chaplain for nine years. He joined the Scottish Rite, attained 32nd Degree and went on to serve as Master of Lodge of Perfection and Rose Croix. He belonged to the Kern County Shrine, Al Malaikahan Temple of Los Angeles, Bakersfield High Twelve Club, American Legion Post #682, and St. Marks Methodist Church where he received Father of the Year 1990 Award. During a period of the 50s and early 60s, Chuck appeared on numerous Valley radio and television shows as a guitarist, and even hosted his own early morning radio show in Coalinga. Chuck truly enjoyed playing guitar and entertaining folks up and down the valley. Chuck was a man who fought a long, hard fight of 7 years, but it did not stop him from taking his daily 5 mile walks. The last year he and Dorothy filled their days with trips to Morro Bay, Laughlin and baseball games. He is survived by his wife Dorothy; son Gary and daughter-in-law Kathleen; brother Virgil and wife Mary of Tulare; brother Altus and wife Betty of Kingman, AZ; sister Joan Witt and husband Norman of Valley Acres; sister Virginia Wallace and husband Art of Palmdale and numerous nieces and nephews. Chuck was loved and respected by many and will be truly missed.
