She was a longtime resident of St. Helena and Napa. She was born April 20, 1916, in Sherman, Texas, to Ollie and Pearl Shields; she was the oldest girl of nine children. She was raised in Holdenville, Okla., where she graduated from Moss High School. Gladys would often recall stories of her childhood, picking cotton at age 7, and watching her father and brothers harvest watermelons. She lived in Shawnee, Okla., and Pampa, Texas. In 1939, she and her husband, Herbert Cisco, came to see the Worlds Fair on Treasure Island and fell in love with California. They moved to Napa in 1942. Gladys was proud of her work accomplishments. She was a "Rosie the Riveter" at Firestone in Long Beach. She and her sister, Reba, graduated together from Napa State Hospital's psychiatric technician program; they were sharp and stylish in their starched white uniforms and nurse's caps. In her retirement years, Grammie enjoyed flower gardening, crocheting beautiful afghans and pampering cats. She was a member of the Napa Charter of the Eastern Star, Silver Spray, for 33 years. Gladys was predeceased by her brothers, Louie, Roy and Alton Shields; sisters, Lois Weaver and Reba Bradley. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Danny Jones of Huntington Beach; daughter, Sharon Cisco Graham of Rutherford; sister, Joyce Baierlein of Roseville; and brother, Kenneth Shields and his wife Lee of Lamar, Okla. She leaves three grandchildren: Vickie Leaverton, Dan Jones Jr., Ken and Dianna Graham and four great-grandchildren: Michael Leaverton, Nicole and Lauren Jones and Nathanael Graham. She is also survived by her cherished friend, Don Charon of Napa. She amazed her family with her stamina in life, her razor sharp intellect, quick wit and humor and an unfailing memory clear to the end. She was a pistol -- and we loved her! In her last weeks, still clear and sharp, she shared her wisdom, her softness of spirit, love, humility, grace and humor, waiting for God to take her home. Now, she is there. Graveside services will be at St. Helena Cemetery on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 11:30 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to We Care Animal Rescue, 1345 Charter Oak Ave., St. Helena, CA 94574 or Hospice of Napa Valley, 414 So. Jefferson St., Napa, CA 94559. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Pottawatomie County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/pottawatomie/pottawatomie.htm
