All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Vera L. Shaffer, 92, of Amarillo died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 S. Bell St., with Dr. Chester O'Brien of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mrs. Shaffer was born to George and Lula Hardwick on Sept. 16, 1909, in Calvin, Okla. She married Milton F. Shaffer on Dec. 18, 1929, in Seminole, Okla. They moved to Amarillo in 1937. She attended Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla., where she earned a bachelor of arts degree and West Texas State University where she earned a master of education degree. She was an elementary school teacher for 26 years and was listed in Who's Who in Texas Education. She was active in First Baptist Church of Amarillo, National Education Association and Texas State Teachers Association. She was past president of Amarillo Garden Club and Kappa Kappa Iota sorority. Pallbearers include Mark Shaffer, Stephen Shaffer, Jim Shaffer, Roger Chastain, Paul Escamilla and Raymond Foster. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sally Ruth Shaffer Miller, in 1982; her husband in 1988; her parents; two brothers, Brian Hardwick and Leon Hardwick; and two sisters, Bertie Hardwick Chastain and Lilian Hardwick Collier. Survivors include a son, Gerry M. Shaffer and wife, Janis, of Dallas; three grandsons, Mark Shaffer and wife, Loretta, of Eros, La., Stephen Shaffer and wife, Rebecca, of Downsville, La., and Jim Shaffer and wife, Anne, of Tulsa, Okla.; a stepgranddaughter, Pamela Helgren of Dallas; and five great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice of Amarillo; or Boys Ranch.
