MAURICE GILLIAM SERVICES HELD Maurice Gilliam was born December 3, 1922 in Antlers, Oklahoma and passed away on April 14, 2002 in Paris, Texas at the age of 79 years. Mrs. Gilliam has been a resident of Antlers for the past 45 years. She was of the Church of Christ faith and a past member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Stinnett, Texas. During WWII she worked making tents and ammunition igloos and later for Douglas Aircraft in Tulsa as an aircraft painter. She was promoted to paint inspector because she was a perfectionist. She was the first lady to become a Fuller Brush salesperson and she was also sold Salad Master and was in the top 50 sales persons for the product. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, flowers, yardwork, canning and cooking for the holidays. She was preceded in death by her parents: James and Eva Hammons; 2 brothers: William Harley Hammons and James William Hammons; and grandparents: Gladdison Jefferson "Bud" and Mattie Baker Thomas. She is survived by her husband Ben Gilliam of the home in Antlers, Oklahoma; 2 sons: David Earl Gilliam of Canyon, Texas and Bobby Wayne Gilliam of Antlers, Oklahoma; 1 daughter: Bennie Sue Norton of Allen, Texas; 5 brothers: Raymond Hammons of Antlers, Oklahoma; Billy Jack Hammons of Wilburton, Oklahoma; Donald Dean Hammons of Antlers, Oklahoma; Ronald Gene Hammons of Antlers, Oklahoma; Robert Daniel Hammons of Wilburton, Oklahoma; 1 sister: Temple Irene Hammons Jordan of Searcy, Arkansas and 5 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 18, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mills-Coffey Chapel with Herbie Lee officiating. Serving as pallbearers were: Tommy Jones, Gary Hammons, Johnny Parks, Stan White, Dillard Grimmett and Sam Smith. She was laid to rest at the Antlers City Cemetery under the direction of Mills-Coffey Funeral Home in Antlers, Oklahoma.
