Smythe was born in Honey Grove, Texas on October 14, 1908 to Sythe Ambrose and Rosa Emily (Martin) McCleary. He had been a resident of Antlers since coming here from El Paso in 1960. He was a member of the Antlers Presbyterian Church. He attended Hugo High School and Austin College in Sherman, Texas and the University of Texas in El Paso, Texas. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #1127 of El Paso and had worked as a border patrol for U. S. Customs. Smythe is survived by his wife Daisy B. Tims McCleary of Antlers, Okla.; 1 son: Dale A. McCleary of Anthony, New Mexico; 2 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren as well as several other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 son: Richard Wayne McCleary; 1 brother: Hunter McCleary and 1 sister: Lois Mildred McCleary Grady. Funeral services were held on Friday, March 16, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at the Mills & Coffey Chapel with Reverend Patricia Bustle officiating. Serving as pallbearers were the Antlers Mason #39: John Brandon, Ray Pool, Charles Uhles, Homer Miller, Steve Kirk, and Myrle Redman. Burial was held at the Antlers City Cemetery under the direction of Mills & Coffey Funeral Home of Antlers, Oklahoma.
