On the A. B. Smith farm, two miles south of Butler, a well was recently drilled that had every indication of gas. This well is 112 feet deep. The well driller told Mr. Smith that there was gas in the well and if he did not believe it to light a piece of paper and drop it in. Smith did as directed with the result that a blue flame shot up from the well and a report like very heavy thunder was heard. The water in this well has a very peculiar smell and taste. Could it be possible that there is gas within two miles of Butler? Mr. Smith intends to further investigate the well by drilling to a greater depth and ascertain if there is such a thing as gas in this region. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Roger Mills County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/rogermills/rogermills.html
