He was born October 23, 1924 in Reydon, Oklahoma the son of Leo and Pyrle (Jackson) Bessire. Roy served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a medic. He was a farmer and rancher before becoming the owner and operator of Ulysses Hardware for 37 years. He was a member of the Church of Christ and their song leader for 50 years. He belongs to the Ulysses Rotary Club and served as president twice. He was also their son leader for 30 plus years. Roy was a member of the BarberShop Quartet Singing Asssociation and Santa Fe Trail Association. Roy married Fern Tuttle on May 1, 1943 in Guymon, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on May 2, 1991. Survivors include two sons Mick Bessire of Reoundtop, New York and Tony Bessire of Sarasota, Florida; 6 grandchildren ands 4 great grandchildren. Roy was also preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 25, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of Christ, Ulysses, Kansas with Minister Lemuel Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery, Ulysses, Kansas with military rites performed by Dexter D. Harbor American Legion Post # 79. Memorials may be given to the Mountain States Children's Home or Ulysses Relay for Life both in care of Garmand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, KS 67880.
