He attended school at Reydon and Durham, having graduated in 1943. He then joined his two brothers and a sister in California and started working aas a mechanic for the Santa monica Bus Company. Not for long though, as George's patriotism guided him into the U.S. Navy, where his brogther, Paul was already serving. This was October 1943. George received training as an Aircraft Mechanic and Flight Crewman, becoming the Crew Chief of his Flight Crew, who manned and flew a Navy B-24 Bomber. This Crew eventually made 44 combat flights over Japan and Japenese held territory. They suffered two crash landings and other close calls, but they all returned home safely. To this I can attest, since they all came to visit Polly and me shortly after I was discharged from the Navy in March 1946. Some of the sotires they told seemed almost unvelievable, even though they had the ribbons and medals to back them up. And in addition, the various members had nothing but praise tor their Okie Crew Chief, giving him credit for their being able to always start their missions with a safe and properly maintained aircraft. George was employed by Douglas Aircraft, Santa Monica Plant, almost immediately after returing to civilian life. He then married Mary Douglas, a Nursing Student, who eventually became a Registered Nurse. They raised son, Larry and daughter Betty who gave them a total of five grandchildren. Many residents in Hesperia, California, and in addition, George leaves three brothers, two sisters and his mother Lillie May Goodwin Butler, living in Lee's Summit, Missouri. George was preceded in death by his father, Walter E. Butler of Durham and his brother, James Paul Butler of Weldon, California. Yes, Uncle George will certainly be missed by his remaining family and all the nieces and nephews. We all wish you well, George, in your "New Endeavor".
