Services were held at 3:00 p.m. Firday, February 21, 2003 at the First Baptist Church in Groom with David Kelly of the church officiating. Burial was held in the Groom Cemetery under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia. Mr. Black was born on July 22, 1922 to SamuelNewton and Mae Gibbons Black. He was raised in Groom. He joined the Army Air Corps in Octobver of 1942 and became a member of the 55th Reconnaissance Squadron Long Range Weapons Unit. His military occupational specialty was Airplane Armorer Gunner. He was a belly gunner on a B-24 which flew long range weather missions over Japan during the last 6 months of World War II. He was awarded the American Theater Service Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged at Fort Bliss in November of 1945. As he served his country he often said if he ever got back home to Groom he never wanted to leave again. He served as a deputy sheriff for Carson County from 1952 until 1963. In 1963 he became the rural mail carrier for the Groom area and held that position until he retired in 1982 when he began farming and ranching near Crawford, Oklahoma. Kenneth married Nadine Keahey in 1942 at Temple, Texas. She preceded him in death in 1986. He married Betty Lewis in 1989. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jackie Nepper Bichsel, and a brother, Donnie Black. He was a former member of the Groom Volunteer Fire Departent, an FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer and a member of the First Baptist Church of Groom. Survivors include his wife, two daughters: Doyla Bell of Amarillo, Texas and Connie Fulton of Pampa, Texas; three sons: Dr. Keith Black and his wife Debbie of Miami, Texas, Kyle Black and his wife Veretta of Amarillo, Texas, and Kris Black and his wife Gay of Crawford, Oklahoma; two step daughters: Debra Lon and her husband Ronald of Borger, Texas and Carla Brooks and her husband Gary of Amarillo, Texas; one step-son Donald Lewis and his wife Barbara of Thurmont, Maryland, two sisters: Maxine Quick of Amarillo and Sybil Brown of Groom; three brothers, Doug Black and his wqife Sandra of Amarillo, Herschel Black and his wife Ruth of Hereford, Texas, and Chubby Black and his wife, Nita of Hereford, Texas; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The family suggest memorials be to the Groom Ambulance Service or to the Groom Cemetery Association.
