He passed away January 23, 2003 in his home at Sayre, Oklahoma at the age of 57 years and 25 days. Gary graduated from Cheyenne High School with the class of 1954. By this time he had established a pattern that would follow him through out his life that of working 2 or 3 jobs at one time. He worked part time at the Cheyenne Star and also helped his parents in their cafe and dairy. After graduating from high school Gary joined the United States Army and was stationed 3 years in France. In 1957 he enrolled in college at Sayre and worked part time at the Sayre Headligh Journal. He was married to Roberta Frankie Batchelor at Cheyenne, Oklahoma on October 12, 1958. After completing 2 years of college at Sayre Junior College he transferred to Southwestern at Weatherford and worked part time at the Clinton Daily News and the Weatherford News. He received a B.A. Degree from Southwestern in 1963. Gary worked for the Cheyenne Star and Cordell Beacon before joining the Department of Human Services in 1967. He worked as supervisor in Tillman and Beckham Countied and Administrator in Beckham County. He received a scholarship to Oklahoma University and was awarded a Master of Social Work Degree in 1970. He returned to Sayre and was appointed Field Representative for the Department of Human Services, traveling to most counties in western Oklahoma. Gary retired in 1988 but did not remain idle. He was involved in a number of business ventures, includsing operating a kennel, the Sayre Pest Control, Sayrcxe Ace Hardward, the Hillside Mobile Home Park, the Sayre Donut Shop where he loved greeting friends early in the morning. He believed in living life to the fullest, whether it was building farns, houses or working in his garden. Gary was a licensed Social Worker and id consulting social work at different times for the Weaterford, Elk City, Sayre, Cheyenne and Hollis Hospitals. He also worked for a number of Home Health agency's and did volunteer hospice work. His greatest joy was helping people. He was instrumental in the distribution of mecial equipment for the American Legion. He touched many lives and taught Sociology and Psychology night telecourses for Southwestern University at Sayre and Weatherford. Gary professed his faith in Christ as a teenager and was baptized into Christ the summer of 1974 at the family pond with his mother, Violet and his brother, Manford Bonds. He was an active member of the Sayre First Baptist Church. He was also a past member of the Cheyenne Odd Fellows Lodge, the Lions Club and had served on the board for SWODA and Sagebrush. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Manford. Services were held Saturday, January 25, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Sayre First Baptist Church, officiated by Tom Cooksey and Charles Tatyrek. Burial was held at the Cheyenne Cemetery, Cheyenne, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma, under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service, Sayre. Memorials may be made to the Gary Bonds Memorial Scholarship Fund at any InterBank location. Survvivors include: wife, Roberta of the home; three daughters, Jacqueline Kay and Phil Parker of Weatherford, Oklahoma, Michelle Lynn and Darren Carter of Sayre, Oklahoma, and Denise Ann and Dale Beard of Shawnee, Oklahoma; two sisters, Colleen McKean and husband, Dale of Carlsbad, New Mexico; Janette Brown and husband, Gene of Burns Flat, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren, Katie Dunlap and husband, Chad of Sayre, Oklahoma, Ben Carter and jAbbie Carter of Sayre, Oklahoma; Aaron Parker and Amy Parker of Weatherford, Oklahoma, Adam, Austin and Chad Beard of Shawnee, Oklahoma; host of other relatives and friends.
