Burke 90, passed away Friday, July 5, 2002 in a Ft. Worth, Texas nursing center. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2002, at the Church of Christ in Ranger, Texas with Stan Harvey officiating, under the direction of Baker Funeral Home of Eastland. Interment will follow in the Merriman Cemetery. He was born September 25, 1911 in rural Oklahoma the son of Dennis L. and Cora B. Burke. He started school in Rocky, Oklahoma in 1917. Eight of his first grade class remained life long friends. He graduated from Cordell, Oklahoma high school in 1934 where he was a member of the football, basketball, track and music clubs. He graduated from Southwestern State University in 1938 where he was a member of the student council, men's quartet, senate and choir. He started teaching at Bessie, Oklahoma in 1938 where he was grade school principal and coach. He taught then for three years at Hammon, Oklahoma before going into the First National Bank in Hammon in 1942 and remaining until 1977 when he retired as President and Chairman of the Board. He then moved to Lake Leon in Eastland, Texas where he seved as an Elder in the Church of Christ in Ranger, Texas until he resigned due to ill health. He then moved to Lakewood Retirement Center in Ft. Worth, Texas. He was married on December 25, 1938 to Lorene Elaine lewter at Hammon, Oklahoma. To this union three children were born, Phyllis Hay, Arlington, Carolyn Wynn, Spring, Texas and David Burke, Dallas, Texas. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, his children, his brother Leroy Burke, Rancho Cordorba, California, his sisters Ethel Agath, Stockton, California and Beula Fay Carter, Russell, Kanasa and seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
