Everett Bird died in the Hi-Plains Hospital at Hale Center where he had been a patient for two weeks. Services were held in Seth Ward Baptist Church with the Rev. Herman Krauel, pastor, officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. Carl Lamb. Burial followed in Plainview Cemetery under the direction of Lemons Funeral Home. Born February 16, 1903, in Yantis, he was raised there and attended Rockhill schools. He also lived in Knox City, O'Brien, and Sweetwater before moving to Dumas in 1944. There he was produce manager for Cut Rate Grocery Store until 1953. He was employed as caretaker for the recreation area of Phillips Chemical Company until 1968 when he moved to Plainview. Mr. Bird had been school crossing guard at Hillcrest Elementary School for the past 1 1/2 years, until becoming ill. Mr. Bird was married to Elizabeth Nicholson October 8, 1928, in Munday. He was a member of Fourth Sunday Singers and a deacon at Seth Ward Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife; three sons, W.A. Bird of Plainview, Charles Bird of Beaumont and Ershel Bird of Anton; one daughter, Anne Wallingsford of Plainview; two brothers, Orlie Bird of Wills Point and D.W. Bird of Albuquerque, New Mexico, five sisters, Effie Bessire and Anna Lou Scrivner of Reydon, Oklahoma; Clara Belle Hickey of Sayre, Oklahoma, Lorene Hickey of Bakersfireld, California, Juretta Baker of Littleton, Colorado; 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
