The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. ====================================================================== Dr. Jesse Burnett Barnes of 215 East Van Buren passed away in McAlester Regional Hospital. He was 79. Dr. Barnes, a chiropractor by profession, practiced in McAlester of the past 41 years. Funeral Services were held at the Grand Avenue United Methodist Church of which he was a long-time member. Dr. Leroy Sewell officiated. Burial was in the Fairlawn Cemetery at Chickasha. Mill Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Dr. Barnes was born at Lineville, Alabams, October 28, 1902, the son of a Methodist minister. The family came to Oklahoma in 1913. Dr. Barnes graduated from high school at Copan, attended Draughon's Business College at Oklahoma City and college at Edmond. He received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1926 at Oklahoma City. Dr. Barnes was state president of the Oklahoma Chiropractic association in 1959 and practiced his profession for over 50 years. In April 1925, he and Pauline (Polly) Hawkins were married. She survives. He was a member of the Grand Avenue United Methodist Church and served on the administrative board for many years. He also was a member of the T and L Sunday School and was its song leader. In earlier years at Oklahoma City, he sang professionally in a men's quartet. Dr. Barnes has been a member of South McAlester Masonic Lodge No. 96, and McAlester Scottish Rite Consistory. Survivors in addition to his wife, Pauline of the home, include a brother, James of Houston, Texas, several nieces and nephews. Those from here attending the funeral on December 21, 1981 were Mrs. Lena Hawkins, Mike and Bonnie Hawkins, Durham, Frankie Goodwin of Canadian, Texas and Jake and Cora Hawkins of Johnson, Kansas.
