All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Amarillo Globe News 6 May 1997 Vernie Burns PORTALES, N.M. - Vernie Burns, 91, died Sunday, May 4, 1997, at Pueblo, Colo. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Portales Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Horton officiating. Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary Inc. Mrs. Burns was born in Roger Mills County, Okla., and moved with her family to Portales around 1938. She worked at Portales Valley Mills and also at the Borden Peanut Co., as a sorter. She also worked as a housekeeper at the local hospital. She was a self-taught artist in oils. She married Roy Burns in 1925 at Roger Mills County. Around 1952, she and her husband moved to Pueblo, where they lived until 1957, when they returned to Portales. He died in 1972. She also was preceded in death by two sons, Cecil Leroy Burns and Otis Darrell Burns. Survivors include three daughters, Agnes Roverta Bird of Fruita, Colo., Tressie Fay Doughtie of Fort Worth, Texas, and Nannie Lea Langley of Pueblo, Colo.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great- great-grandchildren. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Roger Mills Archives http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/rogermills/rogermills.html
