She was sleeping when the angels came to carry her from her Cheyenne, Oklahoma home on June 3, 2011 along with two of her loving canine companions, Molly and Poupie. She lived life on her own terms, her faith strong through life's sorrow and pain but always choosing to focus on the joys of life and in the process teaching all of those around her the profound lesson of faith, love and getting the most out of our time here. Never meeting a stranger she was known for her great sense of humor and the guarantee there would be laughter in any visit with her. Erma was one of seven children born into the family which settled in Cheyenne, Oklahoma where she excelled in basketball, chorus, bookkeeping, and won several awards for her talent. Not only was she beautiful on the outside, but was beautiful on the inside too. She graduated from Cheyenne High School in 1950 and moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma after graduation where she was employed by Cattlesman's Steakhouse and met her husband Thomas Clovis Barber. They were married on January 12, 1951 in Ft. Benning, GA while he was in the service and made their home in Oklahoma City, OK. After the birth of their eldest child, Linda Jo, they moved to Cheyenne, Oklahoma where three more daughters added to the family, Martha Ann, Sheri Laverne, and Lisa Gayle which is where they resided with their 4 daughters until 1963 when they moved to Moore, Oklahoma. In 1968 she divorced and went to work at Western Electric Corporation and continued to raise her daughters as a single working mom. In 1977 she moved to Newton, Kansas and lived there until the death of her youngest daughter Lisa Gayle. She then moved back home to Cheyenne where she was employed by The Black Kettle Museum and the OK Conservation Dept until she retired. Erma was very active in The American Red Cross, The United Way, and was a member of Eastern Star O.E.S. Mizpah Chapter No. 80 in Cheyenne. While living in Kansas she won the highest award from Eastern Star. In her clorful career she would wear many hats such as bus driver, licensed cosmetologist, grocery clerk, but above all mother and grandmother were her favorite hats to wear. As she was affectionately known by her six grandsons, Dustin, Sean, Joseph, David, Tyler and Owen as me-maw, moo-mee, great granny and grabndma. She loved shopping, was an avid reader, gardening in her yard, sewing, and playing and lving her dogs. She is survived by Tinker Bell, of the home, Three daughters, Linda Henry and husband Steve of Springfield, VA, Martha Ann of Canute, OK and Sheri & husband Trent of Oklahoma City, OK, six grandson, Sean Cordry and wife Tammy of Maude, OK, Dustin Cordry of Oklahoma City, OK, Joseph Henry and wife Cindy of Springfield, VA, David Thomas Henry of Maryland, Tyler Morton of Oklahoma City, and Owen Morton of Oklahoma City, OK, seven great-grandchildren, Cody Miller, of Norman, OK, Trinity Cordry of Maude, OK, Aries Cordry of Norman, OK, Gabe and Jon Henry of Springfield, VA, Sophia Henry of Springfield, VA. She is also survived by one brother Jack Bradley and wife Deloris of Norman, OK, Two sisters Geraldine and husband Charles Bowers of Cheyenne, OK and Betty Laxton, of Sayre, OK and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her daughter Lisa Gayle Jacobs, her parents, Thomas Jackson and Meddie Mae Bradley, three brothers, Samuel Jacksonb Bradley, Glen Bradley, Bill Bradley, one brother in law Rebel Laxton, and two sisters in law Ruthie Bradley and Barbara Bradley. A memorial service honoring Erma was held Saturday June 16, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Cheyenne.
