Barker, son of Thomas Jefferson and Ammie Barker, was born August 18, 1897, at Mt. View, Oklahoma and passed from this life June 27, 1976, at the Roger Mills County Memorial Hospital, Cheyenne, Oklahoma. Luther was 78 years, 10 months and 9 days of age. Luther was of the true pioneer spirit, being born when Oklahoma was still Indian Territory. When just a boy his family moved to Western Oklahoma and settled in old Day County which was later to become Ellis County. In 1916, the family moved to Roger Mills County near Leedey. In June of 1917, Luther volunteered into the service of his country and served in the United States Army during World War I. Luther once again answered the call of his country during World War II by serving in the army. In 1917, Luther trusted the Lord as his personal Savior and united with the Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. He was dedicated to reading and studying the Bible. Luther was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Jessie Carpenter, and Elizabeth Bailey. Those remaining to cherish his memory include 3 sisters, Zelma Dukes of California, Willie Bailey of Leedey, Elola Snell and her husband Jess of Rose, Oklahoma, several nieces, nephews, and a number of friends. Funeral services for Luther Barker were held Wednesday June 30, 1976. Interment followed in the Shirley Cemetery, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma.
