Cook of Moorewood, 95-year old one of the veterans of the Civil War who attended the "last reunion" at Gettysburg earlier this month, was buried at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the Barker cemetery west of Hammon with Rev. Roy Menard of Hammon officiating. The aged veteran of the Union Army succumbed Friday night, a week after his return from the reunion. After his return from the "last reunion," Mr. Cook had commented frequently that he would not have missed attending the reunion for anything, and that he thought it "the finest thing in the world." He stood the trip remarkably well, but became sick Thursday, five days after his return, and succumbed at 11:30 Friday night. He was born in Newfoundland in 1843, came to this country as a boy and settled with his parents in Wisconsin. He was living there when the clash between the states broke out. He was 18 years of aged then. He saw continuous fighting throughout the war and took part in several of the important battles, and had been elevated to corporal when he was discharged. During his recent trip to Gettysburg, he met an old friend who had served in the same company with him during the five years of war. His grandfather, Capt. James Cook, was a famous English navigator. During on of his three famous voyages, he discovered the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands and explored the west coast of North America to the Being Strait. He was slain by hostile natives the following year when he returned to the Hawaiian Islands. The civil war veteran's trip to Gettysburg was a wish fulfilled. "He had been planning the trip for two years--to go back to Gettysburg," members of the family stated.
