Mr. Cates was born on February 18, 1937, in Gatesville, Texas. He grew up in Oklahoma, attending school in Berlin, until moving to Roswell, New Mexico, in 1954. He was employed by Williams and Chesser Farm in Roswell. He also spent three years in the U.S. Navy, followed by several years of employment with Santa Fe Drilling in Saudi Arabia and Venezuela prior to moving to Lemitar, where he was employed for approximately 10 years by the Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro. He was preceded in death by his father, William Louis Cates of Roswell, on December 31, 1977. He is survived by his mother, Augusteen Cates of Roswell; his wife, Carol; a daughter, Matraca Lynn; a son Zachary Don, of the home; a daughter, Debbie Bugg, and husband George, and son, Michael dale Cates of Midland, Texas; a son, Cecil Curtis Cates, Jr. and wife, Deborah of Dexter, Missouri; sisters, Lois Green and husband, Alpha, of Roswell and Ruby Hendrix and husband, Alfred of Carrizozo; brothers, Julian Cates and wife, Sara, of Las Cruces, and Albert Cates and wife, Irene, of Maputo, Mozambique; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
