She passed away December 17, 2004 at the age of 84 years. At the age of seventeen, Pauline met a young man, Joe Cates, who lived west of Moorewood, Oklahoma. From the meeting at a young age, a lifelong partnership spanning sixty-six years was formed as Joe and Pauline were married on September 10, 1938 in Cheyenne, Oklahoma. After their marriage, they lived in Hammon and started their careers in the retail business at the Cates Department store. Their early married years were spent living in Hammon and Moorewood in an old bank building and working in the Cates family business. In 1942 a son, Kenneth Wayne was born to Joe and Pauline. In 1947 Pauline and Joe moved to Leedey to run the family's IGA store. Their second son, Roger Kevin was born in 1952 completing their family. After his mother's death in 1956, Joe and Pauline purchased the IGA and renamed the store the Leedey Locker. They worked side by side in this store until 1983 when Pauline retired and Kevin purchased the store. Joe and Kevin then continued the Cates family grocery business until 1999. Pauline was a member of the Leedey First Baptist Church and assisted with the youth, Falls Creek and enjoyed her Sunday school class. Pauline was a beautiful and talented lady, a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, but most importantly a loving wife. After retiring from a lifetime of retail business, she was able to further her artistic skills in china painting, ceramics and other hobbies. On Christmas 1994, she surprised all her children and grandchildren with a cherished keepsake, a handmade porclain doll. Pauline and Joe were honored in 1997 as having owned and operated a business in Leedey for the greatest number of years. They were very special people to all who knew them and a foundation family for the community. Pauline will be greatly missed for her devotion to others, her beautiful smile, her friendliness and her love of family.
