All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Surnames: Chalfant, Warren, Jack Funeral services were held for Loura chalfant, Pioneer of Roger Mills County, on Tuesday, December 26, 1978, in the cheyenne United Methodist Church with Rev. Homer Williams and Rev. A.L. Martin officiating. Mrs. Chalfant passed away following an extended illness in the Roger Mills Memorial Hospital on December 23, 1978. Loura Warren was born March 7, 1896, in a log cabin on Croton Creek west of Cheyenne in Oklahoma Territory. When she was 1 year of age her parents moved to Cheyenne so her 2 brothers and sister could attend school, but when she was 4 years of age her parents moved back to the ranch. They hired a teacher to teach them school and piano in their home. This method was used for four years, then her parents would spend their winters in Cheyenne and their summers on the ranch. Loura Warren attended school at Cheyenne, Kiddy-Key College and Conservatory of Music where she graduated with a B.L. Degree with a major in music. On April 9, 1917, she married William L. Chalfant, and they moved to Augusta, Kansas, before moving back to Cheyenne to make their home in 1918. In 1919 she became a member of the Platonic Club, served as President in 1927-28 and again in 1959-60. She was chosen as an outstanding club woman and had received her 50-year pin. Mrs. Chalfant served as Fine Arts Chairman for the Fouth District Federation from 1951-53, 1960-64, 1972-74. She served as president of the Pioneer Club in 1950 which was their golden year. In 1972 she was elcted Roger Mills Pioneer Woman of the C & A Country to serve until 1977. Mrs. Chalfant taught music for more3 than 50 years and participated in the music of the Methodist Church since she was 12 years of age. Mr. and Mrs Chalfant were very instrumental in getting a library for cheyenne, and she has served as Trustee for the Western Plains Library Service for 5 years. She was a member of the Sayre U.D.C. Preceding her in death were her parents, Husband, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Survivors are 3 sons: J.W. and Billy, both of Cheyenne, and Wesley of Midalnd, Texas; 1 daughtger, Jean Jack, Sulphur; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Grandsons served as pallbearers.
