Combs, commonly known here, as Uncle Charley, died very suddenly at his home in this city. He had been in poor health for some time, in fact had been failing ever since he came to Cheyenne in 1920. For the last few years he has emerged from the winter months a little weaker. While his death was very sudden, it was no great surprise to those who knew of his physical condition. Uncle Charley was typical western pioneer, frank and honest. He never hesitated to take his stand on any question when necessity demanded it. Charles Marion Combs was born May 4, 1854 near Fayeteville, Arkansas. When a child he went to Dallas, Texas where he grew to manhood. In 1882 he married Samantha Cox and to this union a son, Bill, was born. A few years later the wife and mother died. In 1898 he settled on a claim in Old Day County near the present town of Leedey. He married Ida Howard and lived at that place until 1920 when he moved with his family to Cheyenne where he spent the remainder of his life. He passed away June 17, 1937, at the age of 83 years, 1 months, and 13 days. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife; three sons, Bill of Amarillo, Texas; Charles of Winston, New Mexico; and Carl of Los Angeles, California; three daughters, Faye Cross, Iva armstrong and Joyce, all of Cheyenne; five grand children, Marion, Bill and Frances Ruth Cross; Billy Gene and Joann Combs. Interment was made Sunday afternoon in Center Chapel cemetery, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma, near Leedey, OK -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Roger Mills Archives http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/rogermills/rogermills.html
