All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Surnames: Cross, Nicholson Merlin Buford Cross, the fifth son of Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Cross who live a few miles north of this city, was born February 12, 1900 in the present home of his parents. Except the few months in which Merlin was in the Navy he has resided in this county and was educated in the schools of this city. On June 3rd, 1918 at the call of our country he joined the Navy for a four year's term in the reseve force. His service was confined to the western coast, serving at the following places: Maire Island, Goat Island, San Diego, North Island and again at San Diego. He was given an honorable dishcrge in February after the Armistice was signed in November. On May 2nd, 1920 Merlin was married to Essie Nicholson, the oldest daughter of County Teasurer J.T. and Mrs. Nicholson of this city, and to this union have been born three children, Nadine, Merlin Jr., and John Thomas. In August of last year Merlin was converted and joined the Cheyenne Baptist church of which he has since been a member. On Monday morning before his death at midnight he said he was ready to go if death should come. At midnight Monday, October 5, 1925, resulting from severe burns received Sunday evening, he passed to his reward, leaving behind to mourn his going, a wife and three children, a mother and father, five brothers and a sister beside a host of other relative and friends. Merlin was well known in this community and highly respected. His death brings grief not only to his family and relatives but to the whole community. The funeral services were conducted in the Baptist church Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Twitty, the pastor, after which the remains were buried in the Cheyenne cemetery, Cheyenne, Roger Mills county, Oklahoma. The funeral which was a military one was under the auspices of the American Legion of which he was a member. The crowd attending the funeral was one of the largest ever present at a funeral in Cheyenne which bespeaks the esteem of the deceased and the family.
