The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. http://www.usgwarchives.net/ *********************************************************************** Obit for Jacob Howard Carter Jacob Howard Carter was born September 20, 1914 to Issac Washington Carter and Martha Elizabeth Carter, near Leedey, Oklahoma. He passed from this life, January 30, 1987 in Elk City Community Hospital, Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of seventy-two years. When Howard was one year of age, he with his parents, moved to New Mexico, then two years later returned to Dewey County, locating on a farm near Aledo. He received his education in the Aledo and Leedey School systems. On September 20, 1941, Howard Carter and Bernice Kauk were united in marriage at Arapaho, Oklahoma. Soon after their marriage, he accepted employment with Beechcraft in Wichita, Kansas, where they lived until his induction into the service of his Country in 1943. He served his Country well and courageously through these three years, 1943-1946, serving as a member of the Aviation Engineers of the United States Army. He participated in the campaigns of Guam and Okinawa, serving with honor, and advance to the rank of Corporal. Upon receiving his Honorable Discharge in 1946. Howard and his family returned to their farm near Aledo, where he lived until his death. Three daughters, Sandraa, Melba and Christa were born to Howard and Bernice Carter. Howard was deeply devvoted to his family, and through the years, their happiness came first in his life. Mr. Carter chose farming and ranching as his life's occupation. He was a progressive farmer who enjoyed raising Angus cattle, always seeking improvements in his herd and with his farming operation. He served on the Co-op Board for many years, was a member of the Angus Association, and of the Roger Mills Cattle Association, and for fifteen years he was an able member of the School Board. In July of 1933, Howard Carter made his commitment of Faith in Christ and became a member of the Rhea Baptist Church. Through the years, he served his church in many ways, including Deacon of the Church of and also as Song Leader, always pleased to be of help in any area where he felt needed. His special interests were his family and his church, visisting and sharing memories of former days with others, and building various things in his work-shop. Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his parents, I.W. (Wash) and Lizzie Carter, and two sisters; Irene Speer and Blanche Carter. He is survived by his wife, Bernice, of the home; three daughters, Sandra Carter of Leedey, Melba Thomas and husband Gordon Thomas of Reydon, Oklahoma and Christa Arney and husband, David Arney of Mooreland, Oklahoma. Three grandchildren, Chelsea Thomas, Jared and Laura Arney; one aunt, several nieces and nephews, other loved ones and many friends. Services for Howard Carter were held Monday, February 2, 1987 at 2:00 p.m. in the Rhea Baptist Church of Leedey, Oklahoma with Frank Renfo officiating. Casket bearers were Mike Kauk, Terry Kauk, Roger Ommen, Chester Owens, Jack Ray and lyle Wayne Rounds. Interment followed in the Rhea Cemetery in Leedey, Oklahoma under the direction of Shaw Funeral Home. Cheyenne Star, Cheyenne, Ok
