Carlton Rector R. Carlton, son of William LeRoy and Gerva Moore Carlton, was born near Leedey, Oklahoma, on October 27, 1911. He passed from this life on January 9, 1989, in Elk City Community Hospital, Elk City, Oklahoma, at the age of seventy-seven years. He began his education in the Banner Rural School near his home, southwest of Leedey, finishing his elementary education in Leedey High School. On April 30, 1932, Rector Carlton and Orpha Barnard were united in marriage at Elk City, Oklahoma. One daughter, Juana Kay, was born to them. The farm hoem southwest of Leedey was maintained until 1977, when they retired and established their home in Leedey where they have lived these past eleven years. In 1959, at the age of forty-seven years, Mr. Carlton made his commitment of Christian Faith and became a member of the Liberty Center Baptist Church. Mr. Carlton was a farmer, one who greatly enjoyed this employment. The open spaces which farm life afforded him also give him and opportunity to enjoy hunting, gardening, and working with horsess and dogs, training them in his own special way. Those years were happy ones in his life. He loved good stock and laways made an effort to have that type of animals for training. He enjoyed gardening and was pleased always to share the fruits of his labors with others. These material things of life were pleasing to him, but his greatest possesion was a heart filled with love and compassion for his family and many friends. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. Mr. Carlton was preceded in death by his parents, William Leroy and Gerva Carlton. He is survived by his wife, Orpha, of the home in Leedey, one daughter Juana Kay Penry and husband, Leroy, of Leedey, two granddaughters, Shirley Penry of Ft. Worth, Texas and Jo Cole and husband, Russ Cole, of Leedey; one grandson, Rex Penry, also of Leedey, and three great grandchildren, Charlotta, Jenna, and Cody Cole of Leedey; two brothers, Laverne and Walter Carlton, both of Oklahoma City, one sister, Merilea Miller of piedmont. There are also surviving one aunt, several nieces and nephews, other loved ones and many friends. Memorial services were held on Wednesday, January 11, 1989 at the First Baptist Church, Leedey, Oklahoma with Gary Baird officiating. Interment followed in the Evergreen Cemetery under the direction of Shaw Funeral Home of Leedey. Casketbearers were Jimmy Bales, Kevin Cates, Eddie Haynes, Dale Johnson, Edward Smith III, and Arthur Welty. Cheyenne Star, Cheyenne, OK
