He passed away September 5, 2002 in Oklahoma City after a lengthy illness. In 1944, his parents moved to Leedey from Putnam. Bud attended the Leedey Schools. As a teenager, he was baptized in the First Baptist Church of Leedey. After graduating in 1958, he trained racehorses in several states. On April 13, 1963, he married Patricia Shaw in Leedey. To this union, one daughter, Serena, was born. Patricia preceded him in death in February 1997. During his adulthood, he enjoyed farming and ranching while working for the State Highway Department and later as foreman for District 1 in Dewey County, retiring in 1992. He loved his horses and cattle as well as horse racing and rodeos. In his later years, he enjoyefd leather craft and keeping in touch with friends and relatives through the Internet. Bud is survived by his daughter, Serena and her husband Michael Kauk of Owasso, Oklahoma, and his two grandchildren, Kirsten and Kurt Kauk, who were apples of their grandfahter's eyes. He is also survived by Patricial Cates, his fiancee', as well as Patricia's children, Dennis Cates and family, Justin Cates an family, and Daphine Jaquez and family. He is also survived by one brother, Gary Don Carey, of Sayre, Oklahoma, and three sisters, Myrna Carney of Norman, Oklahoma, Marilyn Harrel and her husband Jimmy of Leedey, Oklahoma and Glenda Cravens and her husband Jay of Putnam, Oklahoma. Two nephews, Randy and Monty Cravens, one niece Keela Terry, several great nieces and nephews, and one uncle, Ed Akin of Weatherford, Oklahoma. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ed and Mattie Carney and John and Augusta Deickman. Services were held Sunday, September 8, 2002 at the Leedey First Baptist Church with interment following at Rhea Cemetery. Services arranged and conducted by Shaw Funeral Home, Leedey, Oklahoma.
