The crowd came from Elk City, Mangum, Cheyenne and many other places. After the Scripture reading and a tribute from Rev. Fred Wright, a long time friend of Mr. Caffey, G.E. Martin of Elk City delivered the funeral address. Mr. Martin had known and been a close friend of Mr. Caffey since 1892. He eulogized Mr. Caffey as being a man of his word, the most honest man he had ever known, a man who stood by his friends, a friend of humanity, a man with a distinct philosophy of life; he stated that he thought no country but the great open West would have been suited to the great open life that John Caffey lived. The church was laden with flowers sent by friends from far and near; the crowd thronged the entire yard about the church. At the grave the Masonic brothers performed burial rites for one whom had been a member since 1902. A striking incident of the burial was the airplane of Dr. Fowler Border of Mangum swooped low and dropped flowers on the grave. John Caffey came to Roger Mills county at the opening in 1892, homesteaded the farm upon which he resided at the time of his death. He had a wide range of acquaintance, as he mixed and mingled with folks and no man played a more important part in the development of the country than John Caffey. John N. Caffey was born in Alabama in 1858, but came west at an early age. He was married in 1892 and to this union were born eight children, who are Mrs. Guy Brooks, Lee and Harry Caffey of Mangum, Mrs Pace and H.C. of Strong City, several grandchildren and a host of other relatives. Mr. Caffey died very suddenly Friday afternoon, June 1, 1934, from heart trouble with which he had been afflicted for the past few months.
