He passed away October 18, 2008 at Sayre, Oklahoma at the age of 97 years, 3 months and 5 days. Eldridge grew up in the Square Top community on Beaver Dam Creek. He rode his horse three miles to get to school daily. Eldridge graduated from the 8th grade at Square Top before continuing his education at Cheyenne High School, where he graduated in 1930. After graduation he worked on the family farm when he met the love of his life. He married Enid Marie Sare at Hammon, Oklahoma on Octobeer 13, 1934. In 1935 he went to Le Fores, TX to work in the oil field with his brother Roy. Later, in 1936, he, his wife, two nephews and a neighbor moved to California to pick fruit and work as farm laborer. They were later hired to chop wood in the mountains of California. Eldridge learned the trade of dry cleaning. In 1938 they returned to the Cheyenne area and opened Calvert Cleaners. He and Enid had four children at the time he was drafted into the United States Navy in 1944. He was stationed at Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay and served on the USS Callen where he served as the ships tailor and anti-aircraft gunner. During his time of service Eldridge crossed the Pacific Ocean eight times carrying troops to various battles. He was discharged in 1945 at the end of World War II. After his discharge, he returned to Cheyenne where he built the building for Calvert Cleaners and continued until 1988. While operating the Cleaners, Eldrige was very active in the community. He served several terms on the Cheyenne School Board, served as a ly minister, storm spotter, Boy Scout Master for Troop 108 and was a charter member of the Future Farmers of Oklahoma before it later became a national organization known as Future Farmers of America. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son Eldridge, Jr., five siblings and their spouses: Memory and Roxy Calvert; Ora and Lee Waldrip; Octava and Roy Sprowls; Roy and Charlotte Calvert; and Frank and Ivy Calvert. He is survived by his four children, Jimmy Calvert, Cheyenne, OK, Janet Lovett and husband, Frank, Alvord, TX, Jerald Calvert and wife, Tomasina, Reydon, Oklahoma, and Bob Calvert and wife, Annie, Johnstown, CO; 8 grandchildren, Steve Lovett and wife, Ann, College Station, TX, Cindy Coffman and husband, Steve, Prosper, TX, Troy Calvert and wwife, Christine, Clinton, OK, Kelly Lockmen and husband, Bobby, Wellington, CO, Robin Shafter and husband, Paul, Azle, TX, Tawyna Thompson and husband, Michael, Reydon, OK, Valorie Branstool and husband, Rick, Yukon, OK and Robert Calvert, Hartford, SD; 21 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephewws, other relatives and friends. Services will be held Monday, October 20, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cheyenne United Methodist Churcfh officiated by Greg Keith. Burial will be at Cheyenne Cemetery under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service.
