He and his family had arranged to leave Thursday night for Corpus Christi, Texas believing the change of climate would be beneficial to him. He had an attack with his heart on the street in the afternoon, but he suddenly recovered from it, but another came on after reaching his room at the Mrs. Wood home. Mrs. Cook went to call the doctor, during which time his motherr, Mrs. Refkochl was watching over him. He became unconscious and as the doctor and friends arrived he passed away. His friends knew of the seriousness of his condition, but he always seemed so optimistic, believing that he would recover, until they also thought he would be spared many years, and his death came as a shock to all. Lorenzo Dow Cook was thirty-six years old the 13th of last January. He was born in Fayette county, Texas and when a mere lad moved to Austin, thence to Washita county, Oklahoma. Fifteen years ago he moved to Grimes, Okla., where the editors of the News-Democrat first became acquinanted with hime and where he had a large circle of friends. Three years ago he moved to Kiowa county, then two years ago he moved to a farm near Strong City, in Roger Mills county. A good part of this years has been spent in Elk City, where he has been taking reatment for heart trouble. Mr. Cook was married eleven years ago to Miss Helen Cronin of Cheyenne, who with a little daughter Marie, six years old survive him. Two children had preceded him to the heavenly home. His mother, Mrs. Riefkehl, and brothers, John Cook of Grimes. Landon Cook of near Elk City, and sister, Mrs. Willie Ross of Austin, Texas, with step-father, Mr. Riefkohl and half sisters, Mrs. James Puryear, Grimes, Mrs. Lee Hopper, Chandler, Arizona and two half-brothers, Herman and Nugent Riefkohl are left with the wife and daughter to mourn the loss of a devoted son, father and brother. Deceased joined the Christian church at Chickasha, Okla., six years ago, to which he ever remained faithful. He believed in all that was good and him true Christian spirit was manifested throughout his life. He was so unselfish to his family, gladly and cheerfully doing all in his power for their happiness and it was of them he though when making the brave struggle for life. He was so patient and loving. He never became angry with friends. If his feelings were hurt he would wait till later and quietly talk it over until things were settledr right, thereby winning and holding his friends. He was ever worthy of the trust and condifence place in him by his many friends and left behind him. " A good name, better than precious ointment," a record which should be emulated and of which his family and friends should feel justly proud. Funeral services were held at Cheyenne on Friday afternoon, conducted by Eld. Combs and the body laid to rest in the cemetery at that place. Many friends assembled to pay the lasy tribute of respect ot their departed friend. We join with all in offering our deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones. We loved him for he was a true friend. We will miss his happy greetings, but we hope some day to greet him again in that home above. 28-Jun-1917 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Roger Mills Archives http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/rogermills/rogermills.html
