Mahala Emeline Culp was born in southern Indiansa, June 27, 1842 and died near Grimes, Oklahoma May 7, 1909, aged 55 years, 10 months and 13 days. Her maiden name was Barnes. She was married August 19, 1861 to David V. Culp at Geensburg, Indiana. He died near Bethany, MO, February 1904. Nine children were born to this couple; two dying when young. Those surviving are: Lucius of Trenton, Missouri; Frank at Cabool, Missouri; Willis at Clarinda, Iowa and Mrs. Louise Wasson Borden, Mrs. Sophonia Spence, Everett and Orley, all of Grimes, Oklahoma. The deceased moved to Harrison County, Missouri in the fall of 1876 and came to Roger Mills County in 1905. When about twenty years of age she was converted and joined the Baptist Church remaining a faithful member of same the rest of her life. She was a consecrated Christian. Mrs. Culp was stricken with apoplexy on the morning of the 7th of May and at no time regained consciousness, passing sweetly away a few hours afterwards. The funeral services were held at eleven o'clock on May 8th, at the home of her son Everett. A large crowd was present to show their respect and loved for one who had endeared herself to all. Rev. French Lancaster of Grimes, had charge of the funeral service, taking for his text 1 Corinthians 15:53. The remains were laid to rest in Rosehill Cemetery.
