Dunn, outstanding pioneer of the country were held Sunday afternoon in the family home in Cheyenne, at which time many friends from a distance were present to pay respect to the memory of a friend. Many were the floral tributes sent by friends. After a piano prelude by Mrs. L.L. Males and a song by a speial choir, Rev. Ray Menard, pastor of the Cheyenne Nethodist Church read the obituary and a scripture reading. Eulogies were given by O.E. Null, Arnett, a friend of many years, and J.L. Adkins, of Amarillo, Texas an old friend of the deceased. Fitting to the life of Mr. Dunn as a ranchman was the solo "Home on the Range" sung by James Smith, "Home of the soul" sung by Onis Cox, James Smith, Mrs. U.M. Prestridge and Mrs. W.L. Chalfant, concluded the simple service. The funeral was directed by Mrs. L.L. Males and Mrs. W.L. Chalfant in charge of the music; Guy Davis and F.G. Brann in charge of the Masonic rites; Mrs. C.F. Maddux in charge of registeration; and Douglads G. Brann and Mrs. F.G. Brann as ushers. Active pall bearers were were T.M. Reynolds, W.L. Chalfant, Guy Davis, L.L. Males, C.F. Maddux, and O.R. Prestridge. Honorary pall-bearers were C.O. Gause, J.M. Bradshaw, Sam Maddux, Billy Brown, Edgar Taylor, D.N. Hunt, E.E. Casady and Jake Bull. Among the out-of-town friends attending were M.T. Thurmond, Elk City, Oklahoma; Mr.and Mrs. F.W. Holmes, R.N. Higgins, Sr., Sayre, Oklahoma. John William Dunn, age 78 years, three months and 11 days, was born June 18, 1861, near Carthage, Missouri. His father, William Dunn, was killed in the Civil War and in 1865 he came with his uncle, James H. Dunn, to Grayson county, Texas, settling three miles north of Dennison. He moved west to Montaque county, Texas in 1877 and in 1881 to Clay county, Texas, where he engaged in active cattle ranching and continued this business until his death at 2 o'clock Thursday, September 29, 1939. As a pioneer cattleman he had many and varied colorful exdperiences. These coupled with a wonderful memory made his mind a valueable storehouse of pioneer storiews which he always enjoyed telling his friends. He went up the Chisholm Trail in 1884 with one of the Big King herds of Texas and at the time of his death was a member of he Old Trail Drives Association of San Antionio, Texas. From 1885 to 1887 he had a Goverment contract to furnish beef to the U.S. Soldiers stationed at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. He came to old Day cvounty in 1894 and engaged in cattle ranching and except for five years managing the Springer Ranch in Raton, New Mexico. He hasx been active in ranching Ellis and Roger Mills countie for the past 45 years. In 1917 he was marriewd to Daisy Camp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. V. Camp, a pioneer family of Montague county, Texas. To this union were born a son and daughter: John age 20 years and Mary age 19 years both of whom are students in A.& M. college at Stillwater, Oklahoma.
