Kris Rambler officiating. Interment will follow at the Dempsey Cemetery under the direction of the Martin Funeral Home of Elk City. Leonard Abney Ely was born November 2, 1932 at Dempsey, OK to William Crockett and Mary (Abney) Ely and passed away Friday March 24, 2006 at the age of 73. Leonard served his country in the US Army for some 22 years until his retirement. He then taught school; at Burns Flat for some 10 years. He was married to Sally Messecar on April 30, 1955 at Detroit, MI and they lived in several places following Leonard's duty in the Army. They lived in Colorado, Alaska and Germany before moving to Burns Flat in 1975 and then to Canute in 1986. Mrs. Ely preceded him in death in 1989 and in 1991 Leonard was married to Shirley Walker and they have lived in Elk City since. He was a member of the Main Street baptist church and was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, 2 sons, Ronald and Brian, 1 brother, H.C. Ely and 1 sister, Jane Schmidt. Survivors include his wife Shirley Ely of the Elk City home, 4 children, Leonard Ely Jr. and his wife Suprena of Elk City, Cindy Frost and her husband Chip of Pueblo, CO, Melynda Hutton and her husband Shawn of Elk City and Raylyn Walker of Elk City, 17 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Deaton Williams of Elk City and Frankie Tidwell of Cheyenne and a sister-in-law, Laquita Ely of Cheyenne.
