Davenport, daughter of Dave and Elizabeth was born July 15, 1865 in Davenport, Iowa, and departed this life at the home of her son, Doc Fox of Cheyenne, Oklahoma March 26, 1948 at the age of 82 years, 8 months and 11 days. She was united in marriage January 9, 1883 at Bradford, Tenn., to Johnson Monroe Fox. To this union were born sixteen children, five of whom preceded her in death. Beside her own children she was also a loving and devoted mother to six step children and one grandson having reared them to manhood and womanhood. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren and 19 great grand children. With her husband she came to Oklahoma before statehood, settling near Okemah. Her husband departed this life June 1, 1926. Since that time she has spent the last 20 years of her life among her children. When a small girl she dedicated her life to God and ever since has been a faithful follower of Christ. Having made her home in various states and cities she was unable to attend the same church for her Christian worship but at the times of her death her church letter remains at the First Baptist Church at Durham, Oklahoma. Mother Fox was a sweet character and dearly loved by all who knew her. Her trusting faith tempered by kindness and patience and her everlasting friendship endeared her to all. She loved to pray. She believed in prayer. She was always telling others how God answered so many of her prayers. Her loved ones were very grateful and happy that the last prayer was answered. She always wished that when her time came to depart this life she would be at the home of her son Doc, and this wish was granted. Her death came as such a tremendous shock to all for she was so active even at her age. She love to travel and go places. She thought no more of catching a plane from coast-to-coast than a teen-age person would. As a small tribute to her loved ones. I can't say, and I will not say That she is dead-she is just away, With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand She has wandered into an unknown land. Think of her fairing on, as dear In the love of there as the love of here; Think of her still as the same I say, She is not dead, she is just away. The ones left to cherish her memory are eight sons: Raden Fox, Salines, California, Ben Fox of Okemah, Oklahoma, Doc Fox of Cheyenne, Oklahoma, Marley Fox of Marysville, California, Harmon Fox of Okemah, Oklahoma, Walter Fox of Live Oak, California, Roy Fox of Elk City, Oklahoma, Otis Fox of Los Angeles, California, and three daughters, Nora Wells of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Ella Barnes, of Boise, Idaho, Ora Nixon of Wichita Falls, Texas and the grandson, Andy Fox, of Dallas, Texas Cheyenne Star, Cheyenne, OK 8-Apr-1948 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Roger Mills Archives http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/rogermills/rogermills.html
