All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Surnames: Freeman, Haley, Hollowell, Mandrell Originally posted at: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5YB.2ACE/1929 Johnny Freeman was born on September 19, 1911 in Wheeler County, Texas and passed away June 2, 1989 in the Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 77 years, 8 months, 14 days. Johnny moved with his parents, Henry Carl and Martha Freeman to Gen City, Texas where he grew up. He attended Perry Dale School and Sayre, Jr. College. He spent many years as a cowboy in the words of his life long friend, Red Ward, "He was a Cowboy's Cowboy." He broke and trained horses and was able to do any job pertaining to ranch work. It was said that he was such a good horseman that he could make a horse climb a tree if he wanted to. He worked on a number of ranches in both Texas and Oklahoma. He entered rodeos in calf roping competition and he met wife, Ruby whom he married on June 2, 1934 in Arnett, Oklahoma, was barrel raching. Ruby Idell Haley became Johnny's partner in every aspect of life. Although they have two sons, Lindsey and Joe, they parented several other children including nieces and nephews. Johnny became a member of the Church of Christ in 1948 and was always faithful in attending and never missed partaking of the Lords Supper since he was baptized. He committed much of the bible to memory and his everyday conversation was interspersed with scripture quotations. He readily accepted invitations to preach at various congreations including Reydon, Crawford, Durham and many times at Cheyenne. He preached simple, direct easy to understand sermonds. Again in the words of his friend, Red Ward, "He was a Cowboy's Preacher." Johnny moved his family to Cheyenne in 1951 where they lived and worked on a ranch southeast of town for several years. He spent seventeen years working for the United States Forest Service before retiring in 1979. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers. He is survived by his wife, Ruby; two sons and daughter-in-law, Joe and Rhonda and Lindsey and Pamela, both of Cheyenne; two sisters, Glayds Hollowell of Pampa, Texas and Anna Mae Mandrell of Cement, Texas; two brothers, Tom Freeman of Canyon, Texas and Ralph Freeman of Canadian, texas; three grandsons and three granddaughters, Tony, Jody, Taylor, Krista, Misty and Nikole; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Monday, June 5, 1989 at 10 a.m. in the Church of Christ with Willard Cox and C.W. Rhodes officiating. Interment followed in the Cheyenne Cemetery, Cheyenne, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service. Pallbearers were Gerry Fults, Larry Smith, Buster Tidwell, Chalmer Brown, John McLemore and Curtis Cox.
