All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Surnames: Goodwin, Hatley, McReynolds Originally posted at: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5YB.2ACE/0629 Obera Hatley Goodwin was born in a dirt-floored dugout on a homestead near the South Canadian River in Day County, Oklahoma Territory, to William Thomas and Jessie McReynolds Hatley on January 2, 1904. The oldest of six daughters and one son, she left this life on December 12, 1995, at Cheyenne, Oklahoma. She attended South Antelope school, Durham School, Hammon High School and Southwestern State College. She taught at Star Ceneter--near Hammon-- and at Meno near Enid prior to her marriage. On May 11, 1925 she married Robert L. Goodwin, and they made their home in the Durham Community. To this union, four sons were born--Robert L., Jr. in 1926, Dane E. in 1928, Thomas J. in 1929 and John W. in 1935. In 1936, she became Postmaster at Durham--an office she held for 37 years. She was a member and officer of both the National Association of Postmasters and National League of Postmasters. Obera was always active in community affairs. She was an involved member in the Durham Willing Workers and the Ladies home Demostration Clubs for many years. In 1982, she was named the Pioneer Queen for the Cheyenne-Arapaho Old Settler Reunion. She obeyed the Gospel at the Meno Church of Christ in 1925 and remained an active and committed Christian throughout her life. She became a member of the Eastern Star in 1922 and remained an active member throughout her lifetime. She served in every office of the Reydon Chapter of the Eastern Star three times. Obera was a committed and paying Democrat, serving as Washita precinct Chairman at Durham and as Roger Mills County Chairman of the Democratic Party. She delighted in the invitation and trip to Washington to attend the inauguration of President Carter. She was appointed and reappointed by Governor George Nigh, serving for more than ten years as a public member of the State Board Governors of Registered Dentists. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, a brother and three sisters. She is survived by three sons and their wives, Dan and Nancy Goodwin of Stillwater, OK, Thomas J. and Frankie Mae Goodwin of Canadian, TX and John and Phoebe Jane Goodwin of Goodwell, OK, thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.
