She was 88 years and 10 months of age at the time of death. When she was seven years old, the family moved across the Canadian River to what is now Roger Mills County where she grew up attending Pow Wow and Canadian Schools and later Leedey High School. LaVena accetped Chirst as her personsl Saviour as a young woman and was a devoted Christian all her life. She served the Lord in many capacities and always enjoyed working in the Women's Missionary Union of the First Baptist Church of Leedey. On January 9, 1929 LaVena Patterson was united in marriage to Ernest Gilbert at Taloga, Oklahoma. To this union two daughters were born Joy and Jimmy Ruth. The family farmed and ranched on the Canadian River northwest of Leedey with LaVena working along side her husband for many years. In 1964, LaVena and Ernest moved to Leedey where LaVena was able to enjoy many years in service to her church and affiliation with various women's clubs and the Dewey County Historical Society. She was an arden gardener and was known for her profusion of flowers around their Leedey home. LaVena was prceded in death by her husband, Ernest; her parents, three brothers, Bill, Duncan and Jack Patrerson and one granddaughter, Linda Harris of Oklahoma City. She is survived by daughters, Joy Harris and Jimmy Ruth Gilbert of Oklahoma City; five grandchildren, Cynthia Weatley, Mark Clem and Janise Bly of Oklahoma City, OK, Amy Bell of Okemah and Judson Brodersen of Kingfisher; eight great grandchildren; and one brother, Marshall Petterson of Leedey, OK. Graveside services were held Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. at Shirley Cemetery, Roger Mills County, O.
