Born on December 13,1931 in Crawford, Oklahoma to parents, Sidney Gaines and Ruth Ione Wilson Castle. Nan graduated from Crawford High School in 1949. She was married on September 15, 1953 in Kingsland, GA to the love of her life, Richard Norris Gordon. Nan began working with the Palatka Housing Authority in 1964 and was appointed Assistant Directory in 1967. She was quickly elevated to Executive Director in 1974 and worked in that capacity until her retirement in 1985. She was called back to duty as an Interim-Director in 1996, serving for six months. Nan was the Vice Chairman of the Palatka Housing Authority Board from 1985 -1989. In 1978, she was elected resident of the Florida Association of Housing and Redevelopment of Officials (FAHRO). She was the first woman to be selected to this office since its founding in 1939. On February 23, 1989, Nan was awarded the Community Service Award in appreciation of 25 years of service in providing affordable housing opportunities to the community of Palatka. A champion of public housing, Nan oversaw the building of a lot of the public housing projects in Palatka. Nan was a member of the St. James United Methodist Church in Palatka. She was a past member and President of the Pilot International Association of Paltkas. She had lived in Interlachen, San Mateo, Buffalo Bluff, Satsuma, and Pine Island, Florida. She called the Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas, area home. Nan was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan. She was known as Auntie Nan to all her nieces and nephews in Oklahoma and Texas and was loved dearly. Nan enjoyed traveling with her husband in their motor home. She especially enjoyed visiting Sanibel Island and Jeckyl Island. In the past she had been a big supporter of the March of Dimes in Putnam County, FL. She enjoyed cooking, expecially her Mexican dishes. She was preceded in death by her sister, Maxine Jefferson, and her brother, Sid Castle. Emma Nan Gordon is survived by her husband of 56 years, Richard Norris Gordon of Palatka; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Melba Rook, Linda and Clayton Conley, and Peggy and Elmer Sanford all of Oklahoma; her in-laws, Hal, Barbara, Wallace, Gene, Michael, Joan, and Sammy Ray; and many nieces and nephews. The Gordon family will forever cherish the memories of Aunt Nan with which God has blessed us. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Fewbruary 13, 2010 at the St. James United Methodist Church, in Palatka, with Rev. Hardy Sandlin officiating. A video tribute will be shown in celebration of Nan's life. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be sent to the St. James United Methodist Chruch, 400 Reid St., Palatka, FL 32177.
