At two months of age, she moved with her parents to a farm in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma, near Rankin, now Reydon. She graduated from Rankin High School in 1928, In July 1928 she married Roscoe Hooper. They lived for several years in Reydon, Oklahoma where Ross was manager of a General Store and Atrell was the bookkeeper. They later moved to Amarillo, Texas where Ross worked in a Hardware Store and Artell was the bookkeeper. She then worked for a number of years at the Blackman Brothers Department Store as manger of the Lingerie department - Ross and Artell both retired in 1977 and moved to Elk City, Oklahoma buying a home there to be near relatives, especially Atrell's mother. Ross died in 1981 and Artell continued to live in her home until she broke her hip in June 1999. She moved to Elkwood Nursing Home in the summer of 1999 and then to Elk City Nursing! Home in January 2004. Artell was a loving aqnd dedicated wife, daughter and sister - growing and sharing flowers with loved ones and friends - she and her 4 sisters spent many wondserful times together, taking trips and visiting in each others homes for a number of years. While living in Amarillo, she and Ross were medmbers of thge Baptist Church. After moving to Elk City, they became members of the Elk City United Methodist Church, where she was an active member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class until illness prevented her from attending. She died May 25, 2005 at the Elk City Nursing Home at the age of 95. Preceding Artell in death were her parents, Bert and Kitty Purcell - two brothers, John Alvin and J.B., threed sisters, Geraldine Purcell, Berta Purcell Estes and her husband, Eugene Estes and Jane Purcell Swope. Her husband Ross ande five of his brothers, two of his sisters and five of their spouses - also two other brothers-in-law, Charles Simpson and Eugene Divine, and a nephew, Michael Divine. Leaving to mourn her passing are two sisters, Adell Purcell Simpson of Clinton, Oklahoma and June Purcell Divine of Woodward, Oklahoma, two brothers-in-law, Slim Hooper of Farmington, New Mexico and Jack Swope of Elk City and a sister-in-law, Billie Hooper of Amarillo, Texas. Also seven nephews, Gordon and Gary Estes, Pat and Gary Divine, Randall and Danny Swopes and Lloyd Hooper. Six nieces, Janet Simpson Gardner, Karen Estes Dudley, Shirley Hooper Parsons, Kitty Divine Austim, Alana Swopes Jencks, and Debbie Swope Ihrig - and other relatives and friends. Services were held Saturday, May 28, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. in the Whinery Savage Chapel officiated by Rev. Daniel Pulver and Rev. Roy Rowlan. Burial will be at the White Rose Cemetery, Reydon, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma under the direction of Whinery Savage Funeral Service.
