All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Surnames Hughes, Lewis Pauline Lewis Hughes, the oldest child of George and Dicie Lewis, was born June 4, 1910, and died Saturday, May 2, 1998 at Fountain View Villa, Ashland, Kansas. She was 87 years of age. A life long resident of Roger Mills County until 1990 when she moved to Ashland, Kansas to be near a son and wife. Pauline attended the Durham High School and was one of the first graduates of the school. She often talked about how she walked to school or rode in a Model-T bus. Sometimes the students would have to get out of the bus to push it through the sand. On April 23, 1920, Pauline was united in marriage to Afton W. (Bill) Hughes at Sayre, Oklahoma. They resided in the Durham community most of their married life. To this union were born two sons: Milton R. Hughes, born December 7, 1930 and Orton V. Hughes, born February 14, 1938. Pauline was very devoted to her family, her community, and the Durham Church of Christ. She was always willing to serve in any capacity where she was needed. Pauline was a homemaker and spent many hours raising a garden and canning fruits and vegetables to feed her family. She and Bill raised all of their food except for a few necessary staples. She spent many long hours working beside her husband in the fields-whether it be hoeing cotton, picking cotton, or maybe gathering a wagon load of corn. Pauline liked to crochet and read in her spare time. During her life time she has crocheted many beautiful afghans for her children and grandchildren. Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, brohter, Richard Lewis, and a sister, Marjorie Hillman. She is survived by her husband Bill, Ashland, Kansas, sons Milton and wife Charlene of Ashland, Kansas, Orton and wife Margie of Arvada, Colorado. Four grandchildren: Deana Hughes; Darla Harris and husband William; Orty Hughes of Arvada, Colorado, and Randall Hughes and wife Kathryn of Dallas, Texas. One great grandson, Nicholas Randall Hughes, Dallas, TX and a sister Avis Largent, McLoud, OK and several nieces, nephews and many friends. Graveside services were held Tuesday, May 5, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fairview Cemetery, Durham, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma by Rev. Don Hasty, United Methodist minister, Ashland, KS.
