Services will be Tuesday, March 29, 2006 at First Baptist Church, Cheyenne, Oklahoma. Arrangements by Rose Chapel Funeral Services of Sayre, Okla. Burial will be in Cheyenne Cemetery in Cheyenne. Local arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd., Amarillo, Texas. Mr. Haigood, the fifth child of Minnie Pearl James Haigood and Joseph Gordis Haigood, was born July 31, 1920, on the family homestead west of Cheyenne, Oklahoma. He was educated in the Cheyenne Public Schools before attending Cordell College in Cordell, Okla., where he met and then married Doshia Mae Bartlett on Feb. 20, 1941. During World War II, he worked for Douglas Aircraft in Oklahoma City before being called to service. He served with Gen. Bradley's Fifth Army Corps on their drive through Belgium and Northern France and was in the Battle of the Bulge. Under PFC Haigood's leadership, his squad was responsible for the capture of Gen. Von Poppen, the replacement for Gen. Erwin Rommel. For his service he received the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, with two Bronze Service Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp, Combat Infantry Badge and the Honorable Service Lapel Pin. After discharge from the service, Mr. Haigood worked in the dry cleaning business in Snyder and Guymon, Okla., and Hereford, Texas. He was also a painting contractor which lead to his employment with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Amarillo in 1965. At the time of his retirement in October 1984, he was an assistant engineer supervising maintenance of heating and air conditioning for the entire facility. Soon after retirement, his wife, Doshia Mae, died on Nov. 27, 1984. Wally enjoyed his retirement. He was a conversationalist, striking up a conversation with anyone he met. In later years, he loved to talk about his military service and his "growing up years." He was instrumental in collecting information for a family history. He often bragged about how many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren he had. He was preceded in death by his wife and his daughter, Karen Haigood; his parents; three brothers, Clarence, Alva and Homer; and two sisters, Flora Haigood and Irma Loughlin. Survivors include a son, Joe Haigood, and wife, Loretha, of Amarillo; two daughters, Kay Larkey and Linda Prickett and husband, Norman, all of Amarillo; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; nine great-great- grandchildren; a sister, Ruby Maxon and husband, Bob, of Cashion, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Roger Mills Archives http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/rogermills/rogermills.html
