Her mother died when Ruby was five years old. When her father was called into service for overseas during World War I, he placed his two little daughters in the home of an aunt, and later they were adopted by the N.A., Rice family of Forgan, Oklahoma. Ruby Jo, as she was affectionately called by her foster parents, graduated from Brinkman high school, then studied music at Oklahoma University. She taught piano at home a number of years. Her music was one of her greatest pleasurers, and she was especially happy when playing the organ in her church. On March 23, 1940 she was married to Murel K. Hiatt at Hammon, Oklahoma. In September 1946, they, together with their young son, Tommy, moved to Corning, California. As a young girl she joined the Methodist church. Five years ago she and her husband transferred their membership to the First Christian Church of Corning. Ruby Jo was a member of the Hammon Rebakah Lodge, where she had served as District Deputy president. She died August 28, 1951. Ever hopeful of recovery she was cheerful and spent many, many hours making dainty handiwork for those she loved. Her faith in her Master gave her strength for her suffering which will always be a cherished memory and inspiration to her family and wide circile of friends. She is survived by her husband, Murel, and son, Tommy; one sister, Mrs. Warren Conn, Wichita, Kansas; three brothers, Omar Jess Smith, Bethany, Oklahoma, Simon Paul Smith, Kermit, Texas, and W.M. Smith, Bellflower, California; one half sister, Mrs. H.M. Parks, Wichita, Kansas and a host off other relatives and friends.
