Bates, near Rhoades postoffice, on Feb. 4, 1905, aged 87 years. When a child he moved with his parents to New York, where later he was married, but his wife died in 1863. Ten children were born of this union, Mrs. Bates being the youngest child, and but a few months old at the death of her mother. Father Holben moved from New York to Illinois in 1866, afterwards to Nebraska and four years ago came to Roger Mills county with his daughter, Mrs. Bates, with whom he has lived for six years. About fifty years ago he united with the Presbyterian church, and he has ever lived a beautiful Christian life. He has been ready so long to go, saying he had no fear but he was always patient, never complaining, though sometimes he wondered why he was left when younger ones were taken. While quite feeble and sight and hearing became impaired his mind was always bright and he was ever busy. With his knife he whittled beautiful keepsakes out of wood, gyp, etc. At the first County Fair held at Berlin over a year ago, several pieces of his work were shown which were admired by everyone and all the more so as they learned his age. His remain were interred on Mr. Manlove's place near Grimes (Rose Hill cemetery) on Sunday afternoon, February 5, 1905. Rev. M.E. Diehl has charge of the services and spoke comforting words. The relatives have the sympathy of all.
