All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Surnames: Holcomb, Williams, Ferrell, Steiger, Metzler, Vernon, Nichols Chester Irving Holcomb was born January 15, 1917, ten miles east of Leedey at the home of his parents, Charles Augustus and Elmer Lou Williams Holcomb. He departed this life on October 27, 1996 in the same location as the occurence of his birth. He had lived in the same house throughout his lifetime except for the four years he spent serving his Country. Chester was 79 years, 9 months and 12 days of age at the time of his passing. As a boy, Chester was raised in the presence of loving parents and his brothers and sisters. He attended school at Center Point from 1923 until 1932 and was then employed full time on the family farm and ranch. He answered his country's call to armed service in 1942 at the outbreak of World War II. He was a member of the 10th Armored "Tiger' Division and attained the rank of Sergean before his discharge at the end of the war. On May 22, 1947, Chester was united in marriage to Frady Belle Ferrell at Clinton, Oklahoma. Chester and Frady set up housekeeping at the family farm and have kept the farming and ranching tradition of the Holcomb family intact to the present day. They raised their three children, Chester Garland, Danny Lee and Maria June, in the family home with the same respect for Christian values, people and the land as they had been taught. Chester had been baptized as a member of the Church of Christ in 1948. He was a member of the Leedey congregation and served it as an Elder for 40 years and as a faithful Sunday School Teacher. He also served his community as a member of the board of cirectors of the Leedey rural Fire Department, as a member of the Dewey County Fair Boaard, and as a committee member of both the Dewey county ASCS and FHA. He was also very active in the American Hereford Association and took great pride in his herd of registered Hereford cattle. Being raised in the outdoors had given Chester a great appreciation for all living things and he had a great appreciation for each creature's place in God's plan, his cattle, the wildlife that abundantly inhabited his place and the dogs and cats and kittens that mae his home their home. He lived hunting ans trolling the fields and pastures. he loved farmin his fields, and he loved watching his children and grandchildren grow in stature and knowledge, watching their ballgames and their farm and FFA projects all the while they grew toward God. Chester was preceded in death by his parents, by four bothers, Carl, Edmond, Charlie and Howard; and by two sisters, Gussie Steiger and Ola Metzler. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Frady, of the home; by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Garland and Donna and Danny and Sharon, all of Leedey; by his daughter and son-in-law, Maria and Danny Vernon of Sayre, Oklahoma; by his grandchildren, Clint holcomb of Stillwater, Oklahoma; Kelsey Kayla and Kara Holcomb all of Leedey, Zach, Landon and Brooks Holcomb, all of Leedey and Kadie, Jake and Travis Vernon, all of Sayre. He is also survied by a borhter and sister, Orville Holcomb and Odessa Nichols, both of Leedey; several other beloved relatives, including aunts, uncles, cousins and in laws as well as by a great number of friends. Services were Wednesday, October 30, 1996, at 2:00 p.m. in the Leedey High School Auditorium with interment at Ceneter Point Cemetery, Leedey, Oklahoma.
