C. Passmore And Ben Hughes, Jr. Victims Of Mysterious Blast In Amarillo, Texas BLAZE DESTROYS RESIDENCE Officers Search For Others Said To Have Driven Loot-Inside Car From Scene of Blast. Funeral services were held last Saturday in Sayre, Oklahoma, for J. C. Passmore, 26 years old, victim of a mystery blast in Amarillo, Texas on Wednesday, September 14, 1932. Ben Hughes, 30, a convicted bank robber, another victim of the mystery blast, was buried in Elk City Sunday. Both Passmore and Hughes were well known in Roger Mills County, Passmore having resided in the Sweetwater country and Hughes near Moorewood. Passmore had been employed several months in Amarillo as a city trash truck helper. It seems from the story of the mystery blast, that a car was laden with loot taken from the Horace B. Tharp home in Amarillo, that a neighbor was awakened and saw from his window, two men stared towards the house with a gasoline can when a mysterious explosion occurred which wrecked the house and burned the two men to death. The bodies were not identified until Mrs. Passmore, wife of J. C. Passmore, and a Mrs. Ellis, sister of Passmore, went to view the bodies, as did hundreds of others, when they recognized the body of Passmore positively and were convinced the other was young Hughes, although they stated they had not seen Hughes for several months. Mrs. Passmore said her husband had left home telling her he was going to Leedey, Oklahoma, to look for a place. Relatives of Hughes made positive identification of his body. His wife was employed in Elk City, according to reports. Officers in Amarillo are searching for at least one man and a woman, supposed to have been implicated in the blast and burglary of the Tharp home. Witnesses said the loot-laden car, abandoned two and a half blocks away from the Tharp home, was driven away from the scene by a man.
