Ruth was born on October 19, 1920 in Rankin, Oklahoma, the youngest of 13 children born to Richard and Mary Barker. She was mazrried to Wilmer W. "Relium" Hughes on July 30, 1938 in Reydon, Oklahoma on the front lawn of Reverend Horace Woodward's home. Standing in a red ant bed, the threat of rain, nor the minister having difficulty finding a pen to sign the papers did not deter them from exchanging their wedding vows. To this union was born two children, Leon "Snooky" and Sandra "Sandy". While living in Reydon, Ruth organized the "Good Neighbor's Club. This group was active in helping the sick, providing food at funerals, and assisting in the care of the White Rose Cemetery. They later merged with the West Side Club. In 1957 they moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico where Ruth worked in a pastry shop and later in the cafeteria at the University Laboratory. In 1978 they moved back to Reydon to make their home. Here she again became active in the "Good Neighbors Club;" and enjoyed raising a nice garden and sharing the produce with friends and neighbors. Ruth enjoyed being with her family. She looked forward to family reunions where she and her sibling would perform skits and pull pranks on each other. She will be remembered by many for her generosity. Her good nature and her sense of humor. Ruth was a member of the United Methodist Church of Reydon, and was active until her health prevented her from attending. She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings, and her husband, W.W. Hughes, and her son, Leon, of Arizona. She is survived by her Daughter, Sandy Tupin, Los Alamos, New Mexico; Daughter-in-law, Jerry Hughes, Truxton, Arizona; 6 Grandchildren, Darla Kay Thompson, Benji Landabour, Denise Hughes, Lori Seitz, B.J. Ladabour, Dawn Fancher, 15 Great Grandchildren, 9 Great Great Grandchildren, and 2 more expected, as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Services were held Monday, May 17, 2010 at 2:00 pm at the Reydon Community Building officiated by Rev. Lynn E. Brack. Burial followed at White Rose Cemetery, Reydon, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service.
